How to spot a fake job, what Role Den does about them, and how to report or block.
What verification means
Role Den checks who a company is. A company's listings become public only after the company is verified. Verification confirms identity only. It is not an endorsement of a company, a listing or a hiring decision. It does not say that a job is good, that the pay is right, or that you will be hired.
Signs of a fake job
- You are asked to pay a fee or a deposit, or to pay for training, a visa, a uniform or a starter kit, before you start.
- You are asked for your bank or card details, or a copy of your passport or ID, before you have a job offer.
- The job pays you for simple tasks, for liking videos or posts, or in crypto.
- You are asked to receive parcels at home and send them on, to move money for the company, or to buy gift cards.
- The only way to reach the employer is a chat app.
- The pay is far more than the work is worth.
- The job is abroad, and the person recruiting in Fiji cannot show written authority from the Permanent Secretary (Employment Relations Act 2007 s.37(4)).
A real employer does not ask you to pay to apply or to get a job. It does not ask for bank or card details, or for a copy of your ID, before it makes you an offer. If something feels wrong, stop and report it. If you have lost money, tell your bank straight away.
What Role Den holds automatically
An automatic check reads the words of every listing a company posts, and holds a listing that seems to ask for money, seems to ask for bank or card details or an ID, looks like a task, crypto, reshipping or gift-card scheme, or gives a chat app as the only way to contact the employer. It also holds every job for work outside Fiji. A held listing is not public until staff release it.
It refuses an ad that asks for one sex, an age limit, a race or religion, a marital status or a photo. The check reads words only and can miss a scam, so use the signs above too. The posting rules list everything it looks for.
Report a job, an approach or a company
You need to be signed in as a job seeker.
- A job: open the listing and choose Report this job.
- An approach (a message from a company): open Profile and choose Report beside the approach.
- A company: open the company's page and choose Report company.
You pick one of six reasons: Scam or fake job, Asks for money or fees, Discrimination, Offensive, Spam, or Something else. You can add up to 1,000 characters of detail, such as a link. You can report each job, approach or company once.
What happens to a report
Reports go to a queue that Role Den staff read. For each report they can dismiss it, mark it handled, or, for a listing, hold the listing so it leaves the board. Staff with the right access can see who sent a report. The company never sees who reported it. Role Den does not promise to tell you what staff decided.
Open clause: how long staff take to look at a report is not set. The owner must write it before launch.
Block a company
In Profile, find a message from the company and choose its Block button, or open the company's page and choose Block company. A blocked company can no longer find you, shortlist you or send you an approach, and its messages leave your inbox. Role Den does not tell the company. You can see the companies you blocked under Blocked companies in Profile, and choose Unblock to undo a block.
What staff can do
Staff can hold a listing, release it, close it, or delete it. They can reject a company, or withdraw its approval, which takes its listings off the board. They can also delete an application or an account.
