Posting rules
What a listing may say, what Role Den checks, and how long a listing stays up.
Who these rules are for
These rules are for companies that post jobs on Role Den. Job seekers can read them to know what to expect from a listing. The terms of use say more about what a company agrees to. If you are a job seeker, Safety tells you how to spot a fake job and how to report one.
How a listing is checked
Role Den reads the words of a listing with an automatic check. The check reads the title, the description, the requirements and the client name. It checks a listing when you post it, when you change its words, and when you reopen a listing that staff have not released yet. It has two kinds of answer: fix first, or held.
It checks words, so it can hold an honest listing by mistake. Staff can release a listing that was held by mistake.
Wording that is refused: fix first
A job ad cannot do any of these things. If it does, Role Den refuses to save it, you are told which part to change, and nothing is saved.
- It asks for one sex.
- It sets an age limit or asks for a young person.
- It asks for a race, ethnic origin or religion.
- It asks for a marital status.
- It asks applicants for a photo.
The law behind these rules: NZ Human Rights Act s.67, the Australian Sex Discrimination Act and the other discrimination Acts, and Fiji Employment Relations Act s.6.
Describe the skills and the work the job needs instead.
Listings that are held
A held listing is saved, and you can see it. A held listing is not public until staff release it. You read the reason on the listing, with what to change. Changing the listing does not lift the hold. Only staff do that. Staff can release it, or close it with a note. A listing that staff close cannot be reopened by you.
A listing is held when the check sees one of these:
- The ad seems to ask applicants for money (a fee or a deposit).
- The ad seems to ask for bank or card details, or a copy of an ID, before any job offer.
- The ad looks like a task, crypto, reshipping or gift-card scheme.
- The ad gives a chat app, such as WhatsApp or Telegram, as the only way to contact you. If the ad also has an application link, an email address or a website, this does not apply.
- The job is for work outside Fiji.
Open clause: how long staff take to look at a held listing is not set. The owner must write it before launch.
Work outside Fiji
A job is for work outside Fiji when its work country is set and is not Fiji. Recruiting in Fiji for work abroad needs written authority from the Permanent Secretary (Employment Relations Act 2007 s.37(4)). Whoever posts such a listing must enter the number of that authority, and the listing is held so that staff look at it before it goes public.
Recruitment agencies
A company that recruits for other businesses must name the client on every listing. This is a Role Den rule, not a law: every ad shows who the job is for. An agency can also give its licence number, which is optional, and when it is given it shows on the ad.
Pay
When you give an hourly or a yearly pay that looks below the legal minimum wage, the form warns you, and staff see the same warning on the listing. It is a warning only. It never stops you posting a listing. It covers Fiji, New Zealand and Australia, and only when the board's money is that country's money. This page gives no rates, because they change. Check the current rate with your government.
How long a listing stays up
A listing stays public for 60 days from the day it goes public. Staff can set a different time, from 7 to 180 days. A new time applies to listings made or renewed after the change.
The time starts on the day a listing goes public:
- When an approved company posts a listing that is not held, the time starts when it is posted.
- When a company posts a listing while it waits for approval, the time starts when the company is approved.
- When a listing is held and its company is approved, the time starts on the day staff release it.
- When the company renews a listing, the time starts again on the day of the renewal.
Pausing a listing does not stop its time. Reopening a paused or closed listing starts the time again only if its time has run out; if it has time left, it keeps its end date.
When the time is up, the listing leaves the board and takes no more applications, and the company can choose Renew, which starts the time again.
Rules that people enforce
No program can check everything. These rules are enforced when people report a listing, a message or a company (see Safety):
- Every listing must be a real opening that the company is allowed to advertise. A fake job is not allowed.
- Multi-level marketing and pyramid schemes are not allowed.
- Listings for adult work are not allowed.
- Pay and terms must not be misleading.
What staff can do
Staff can hold a listing, release it, close it, or delete it. A company's approval can also be rejected or withdrawn, and its listings then leave the board.
